Okay one more question if you don't mind - I want my shofar for use (primarily) in spiritual warefare and I kind of feel drawn to a Rams horn rather than Kudu (although I think the Kudu look prettier). Would this make sense or are both suited well to this sort of use?

BTW I am really enjoying the forum ! Big Grin

If you're drawn to the ram's horn instead of one of the others possible (kudu being only one), by all means take that into consideration.

Understand that you will not get much in the way of pitch differentiation with all but the very largest rams' horns, however. The smaller Yemenites will sound 2, 3, 4, or sometimes five different pitches, making the scooping, "booWAAAAAAH" sound at the fourth or fifth interval, and usually having at least one higher pitch available for the little "fweep" skirl on the end of the call. Most rams' horns get only one good, solid pitch. That means the scoop and the skirl (boo-, and fweep) are not going to be pitch differentiated, or at least not by much, by most players. Brass players can "bend" a pitch with their lips and can likewise bend it on a shofar, but it's harder to do.

If you listen to the calls available on the Internet, most of them are recorded using a smallish ram's horn. I'm going to try and figure out a way to pull just the shofar call off a recording that I was part of and see where I can post it. Or maybe FlagLady could help with that? Is that possible, FL??

There is certainly nothing wrong with the sound of even the smallest of rams' horns. Each is unique and if you get something that energizes your spirit in the way of warfare, and if that's what you feel the Lord calling you to, go for it! Those are not that expensive and you might end up with more than one horn after not too long a time. Confusedhofar:

Very glad that you're enjoying the forum. We're glad you found us!

Hi Doe,

I'm one of the other Brits that Dean referred to. I haven't been around for a while, mainly due to family illnesses, but I'm going to try to check in a bit more frequently.

I'm thrilled to hear of your interest in all things Jewish and would echo everything Dean said (he's a wise guy). I hope you feel able to stick around. Although the focus of this forum is mainly on the creative arts, there's a strong Hebrew theme to much of what you'll find here. I do a lot of Israeli and Messianic dancing, for example.

I'll try to put some comments together on the stuff you've mentioned, and will also do a list of useful books.

Best wishes,

Dave

Thank you all for your 'welcomes'.

Dean - I purchased a very large Rams Horn from Dominick Zanglar and I am exceptionally pleased with it, so please add mine to the good reports you have heard of him :-)

Thank you for your kind help!

Dave - Thank you for your help - do you have a website relating to your dance workshops?

Blessings

DOE

I don't have a website at the moment, I'm afraid. Is there any information that you'd like to know? Would you be interested in having a workshop?
